Abstract

Reviews the pharmacologic and pharmacokinetic properties of paroxetine. Issues regarding paroxetine and long-term treatment of depression and prevention of relapse, adverse events, drug interactions, and dosing are also discussed. Results of clinical trials, including placebo-controlled trials and comparative trials with tricyclic antidepressant agents and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, support the safety and efficacy of paroxetine in the treatment of depression among adults and the elderly. Available data indicate that paroxetine is an efficacious, well tolerated, and cost effective first-line therapy for depression. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
